Composite Fillings
When a patient has a cavity, Dr. Wynatte Chu may recommend a dental filling in New York, New York. Our dentist will remove the decayed part of the tooth and fill the area with the filling material. Our dental office uses tooth-colored composite fillings, which can also be used to repair cracked, chipped, broken, or worn down teeth. Composite fillings can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. They are chemically bonded to your tooth, which provides further support. Often, less tooth structure needs to removed with a composite filling than with an amalgam filling.
When filling a tooth, our dentist will first use a drill, air abrasion instrument, or laser to remove the decay. The area is probed to determine if all the decay has been removed. When the decay has all been removed, our dentist will clean the area of bacteria and debris. Unlike other filling types, tooth-colored fillings are applied in layers. A curing light is used to harden each layer as it is applied. After our dentist finishes the layering process, she will shape the composite material to the desired result. Then any excess material is trimmed off and the final restoration is polished.
